DPCHFH Supports American Red Cross
Monday, 13 October 2014 08:44

Each year, home fires affect more Americas than floods, hurricanes and tornadoes combined. Danville Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity (DPCHFH) is pleased to join with the American Red Cross as part of their nationwide effort to prevent and alleviate human suffering related to home fires. The American Red Cross has set a goal of drastically reducing the total number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25% within five years.

A cornerstone of the program is working through coalitions of community partners and stakeholders to install smoke detectors and provide fire and disaster safety education through home visits to vulnerable populations in the community.

DPCHFH is joining the Piedmont Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross in this effort and encourages everyone to support two events that are part of this initiative:

Fire Canvassing: Saturday, October 25 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  We will be meeting at the new Danville Fire Department station downtown at 600 Main Street, with plenty of on-street parking.  Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes to walk for about 1.5 hours in any weather conditions.  Bottled water will be provided

Smoke Detector Installation: Saturday, November 1 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Volunteers should meet at the new Danville Fire Department station downtown at 600 Main Street, with plenty of on-street parking.  Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes to walk for about 5 hours in any weather conditions.  We are requesting volunteers to bring folding ladders, cordless drills and screwdrivers if they have them.  Water, coffee, pizza and snacks will be provided throughout the day.

This is an excellent opportunity for church and civic organizations to get involved with this project.
